Willem Hermanus Coetzer
Willem Hermanus Coetzer Born in 1900 in Tarkastad, Eastern Cape (some sources cite Cape Town), he moved to Johannesburg at age two. As a young child he contributed to the family income, by selling sketches that his mother coloured. He studied art via correspondence and spent his time in museums making pencil copies of famous works. After a successful exhibition and support by mentors like Alfred Palmer, he returned to London and studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic. In 1934, he studied etching at the Central School of Art in London.
Coetzer is a famous and prominent South African artist best known for his deep interest and meticulous reconstruction of Afrikaner history. Willem Hermanus Coetzer was known for his detailed still-life, landscape paintings, historical-scenes and Etchings
He received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of the Orange Free State (1980) and the SA Academy for Science and Arts award (1965) for his historical contributions.
