Zakkie worked in oil, watercolour, ink, wash, monotype and etching. In 1957 he studied graphic techniques at the Central School of Art, London.
He taught at Pretoria Technical College and later at the University of Pretoria. He has illustrated various books. He worked as a Game Ranger in the Etosha Game Reserve, Namibia.
His etchings capture the character and movement of animals in the veld.
