W.H. Coetzer – Willem Hermanus Coetzer (1900 – 1983)

Willem Hermanus Coetzer Born in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1900, moving to Johannesburg at the age of two. Willem began to contribute to family income by making sketches, which his mother coloured. Trained as a coach-builder while studying painting by correspondence through the Press Art School in London, later attending classes at the Regent Street Polytechnic and Central School of Art in London in the late 1920s and 1930s. Celebrated for depicting Afrikaner history and heritage; famously commissioned to design the 1938 Great Trek Commemorative Postage Stamps.
