Description

Frans David Oerder was born on 7 April 1867, in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Oeder is a Dutch-born South African landscape, still-life and portrait painter, etcher, and lithographer. Oerder studied in Brussels under Ernest Blanc-Garin. Apart from sketching Oerder produced a fine group of British portraits, painting landscapes and figures and architectural studies, painting flower studies, still life’s, official portraits, and landscapes based on his travels across the country.
Oerder was the first artists to attempt to capture the colour, light and sense of space particular to the Transvaal landscape. Oerder was consistent in his subject matter and style: working most often on portraiture, still life and flower-pieces within the Dutch realist tradition.
