After Irma Stern (1894–1966) Born in 1894, in Schweizer-Reneke, in the Transvaal, a pioneering South African artist who introduced German Expressionism, gained worldwide fame for her vibrant portraits and still lifes. She studied art in Weimar and Berlin, finding a profound mentor in Max Pechstein. She held her first solo exhibition in Berlin in 1919. Local conservative critics initially derided her bold, modern style. Driven by a deep passion for diverse cultures, she traveled widely to fuel a prolific period of painting. y the 1940s and 1950s, she achieved global recognition, representing South Africa at the Venice Biennale and winning the Guggenheim Award in 1961.LegacyStern died in Cape Town on August 23, 1966.
