JOHAN OLDERT (1912 – 1984)
Johan Oldert was born in 1912 in Rotterdam in the Netherlands but resided in South Africa from 1935. He was a painter of landscapes, seascapes, still lifes, figures and abstract pictures and preferred to work in oil.
He was commissioned to do a number of portrait busts in bronze, including those of the late King George VI and Queen Elizabeth in 1947 and Dr H F Verwoerd in 1960.
He studied one year at the Royal Academy in Rotterdam under Koos den Hartog. He also studied in London under Harold Brownword at Regent Street’s Polytechnic. In South Africa he studied at the Natal Technical College under Merlyn Evans and Nils Anderson. At the Witwatersrand Technical College he studied under Eric Byrd.Johan passed away in 1984.
