Dumisani Paul Sibisi, Born in 1962 in Soweto, Johannesburg. Dumisani a prominent South African contemporary artist known for his poignant oil on board, watercolours, mixed-media collages and paintings that captured the raw reality of township life. He was known for incorporating “township scraps”—recycled materials, waste, and offcuts found in the streets—into his 3D-effect paintings. His work is characterized by a “truth-telling” approach to the South African landscape, particularly after the 1994 democratic elections on daily township activities, depicting musicians, vendors and ordinary citizens. He avoided idealising his subjects, instead choosing to show the deprivation and resilience of black South Africans.
He was mentored by legendary South African sculptors Sydney Kumalo and Ezrom Legae.
