Martinus Johannes “Tinus” de Jongh born on January 31, 1885, in Amsterdam began his career as a decorator in the Netherlands, then pursued painting full-time when he immigrated to South Africa in 1921.
He is considered one of South Africa’s most popular self-taught oil painters, with experience in the fundamentals of color, paint mixing and painting techniques. Tinus a Dutch landscape painter best known for his realist depictions of South Africa landscapes and creating acclaimed landscape paintings of Cape Town and Cederberg, keeping within the Dutch tradition.
Today, de Jongh’s works are in the collections of the Pretoria Art Museum in South Africa, the Durban Art Gallery in South Africa, and the Stedelijk Musuem in Amsterdam, among others.
